Exotica

You are currently browsing the archive for the Exotica category.

I think this is perhaps one of the strangest album covers ever — not sure what the bikini-clad dancer Dali painting is doing on a cover with the self-proclaimed “King of Organ” complete with crown and robe, but here we are, and I like it here! The music is top-notch with snappy arrangements of some standards of the day, pretty lively stuff.

I’ll be posting some video from the wonderful Korla Pandit over the next few days. Be sure to leave a comment if you enjoy these.

Korla Pandit is considered by many to be the godfather of exotica music. His live show “Adventures in Music” on KTLA in Hollywood was the first all music television show ever broadcast and featured Korla wordlessly sitting behind his Hammond organ, playing and staring wistfully into the camera. You can read a good bio of Korla at IMDB.

Let’s start with a bang. Turkish Dance has it all, great hook, amorous dancing, and Korla’s Cheshire Cat grin at the end just makes the package complete.

Another great Seeco release found in an out of the way thrift shop in an out of the way town. Melis was best known as musical director of The Tonight Show during the Jack Paar era. You can find out more about him on his Space Age Pop entry. This is a nice mellow record for a Sunday afternoon. Some of the songs here are a little reminiscent of Martin Denny. So if you are a Denny fan, it might be worth checking this one out.

Pan Americana

A 1959 release on Everest records, “a division of the Belock Instrument Corp.” This represents “a new peak of achievement in the recording art.” Get it? I love this cover. And there’s lots of music to like here as well. In fact, the back cover informs us that, “Here is a collection of rhythmic favorites typical of the Americas…danceable and deliciously listenable arrangements of exciting tunes which have become international favorites — captured in their fiery brilliance by the most advanced stereophonic technique in existence.”

For example, Compadre Pedro Juan & El Marinero:
