Bossa Nova

You are currently browsing the archive for the Bossa Nova category.

Here’s another one for your Bossa Nova collection, this one from the world-renowned “International Award Series” from K.M Corp. of Freeport, Long Island (wait … what?).  The cover lists Osie Johnson, Ted Sommer, Bill Lavorgna, Sam Most, Mat Matthews, Hank Jones, Jimmy Jones, Louis Metcalf, Buster Harding, Al Hall as the players. The helpful, hand-written, cover notations reveal that this was possibly released in 1967, belonged to Mary McCoy and cost someone 10 cents at one point. I pretty much buy anything with “Bossa Nova” on the cover, and only bring you the cream of the crop here at Thrift Store DJ.

Have a listen to “Do You Care?”:

Golden Guitar Magic

Here are three sides from a 1969 boxed set that has been Pleasure Programmed (TM) by the fine folks at a little-known magazine publishing house. I know what you may be thinking, “What does that magazine I see at the dentist’s office have to do with Guitar Magic and Pleasure Programming?” Everything my friend. Sit back and mellow out now. And seriously, these are pretty decent tunes. Have a listen:

Product of Brazil

It’s been a good week in Thrift Store land…many interesting posts are sure to come. This was one of the real gems that turned up. Anything on the Seeco label is worth keeping an eye out for. They don’t turn up too often, but when they do, it’s a lucky day. Unlike the previous post’s New Jersey flavor of Bossa Nova, this one was “Recorded in Brazil,” resulting in a slightly different sound, but the same kind of mellow, laid-back vibe. Check out Creo Que Si:

Bossa Nova

The smooth Bossa Nova sound somehow gets horribly lost and ends up in Newark, New Jersey for this low-budget Diplomat release. If you’re looking for some kind of Stan Getz Verve samba, you’ve come to the wrong place. This record is best played on a big wood veneer stereo that’s the size of a small car. It’s one of those records that my parents might have picked up at the grocery store while they were buying cocktail weenies for the big “grown up” party Saturday night. There’s a real nice b-movie vibe going on here. Enjoy “One Note Samba:”
